Ripon Listed Buildings Project
Ripon has many buildings of local and national importance ranging from four ancient monuments through to two Grade 1 and twelve Grade 2* listed buildings, but the City also has 412 Grade 2 listed buildings especially a number of 19th century shop fronts.
Ripon Cathedral and the Obelisk, set in the market square, arguable as Defoe put it “the most beautiful market square in England” are the two Grade 1 buildings and the Grade 2* buildings include the Town Hall, Wakeman’s House and the Prison and Police Museum.
The aim of the Listed Building Project is to compile a database of the building description as it appears in the Listing, an image as it is now and in the past if possible, but also details of owners and occupiers and any uses that the building has been put to over the years.
Currently the description and image are being married together to create the database, but we need volunteers to ‘adopt a building’ and research its history.
