Volunteer and learn about Ripon

(Update)

Following the success of our Volunteers Morning, we are now training our willing helpers ready for opening very soon.

If you feel you can give us a little of your time, we are holding volunteer sessions each Wednesday afternoon in November, 2pm, at the centre.

Watch this space for more details regarding our Grand Opening.

If you have some time to give to help preserve the history of Ripon we would like to meet you!

If you want to learn more about the City and help others to find out about themselves and where they live, come along on Saturday 1st November and talk to us. From 10am on Saturday morning we are having a Volunteers Day and would like to see you.

After 18 months of waiting Ripon Local Studies Research Centre is nearly ready to re-open in the West Wing of the Ripon Workhouse in Sharow View. We are in the western part of the gatehouse block of the Ripon Workhouse which was the original receiving ward of the workhouse.

Ripon Local Studies moved out of premises in the Market Square , above Row's the Jewellers, in April 2007, and we have been waiting to move into the building leased to Ripon Museums Trust from North Yorkshire County Council. We were asked to help the Museums Trust tell the story of the Workhouse and to help people understand the role that Workhouses played in the 19th and 20th centuries in social care.

When Ripon Local Studies is fully operational visitors will be able to look at records of the workhouse, listed buildings of the City, directories, family history texts, information about archaeology, geology and history generally. Visitors will be able to research local history, natural history and the archaeology of Ripon and its surrounding area, look at publications, research, encourage and assist members of the public.

The Centre has copies of local archival material and reference books, leaflets, pamphlets, maps and photographs, but is also a drop-in for anyone wishing to find out information on the City of Ripon or their family history.

We have 6 rooms, more space than ever before, and we need more volunteers to be able to open for 5 days. Come along on Saturday 1st November and volunteer. Your City needs You!
